Unveiling The History behind McDermott’s Castle The Castle, a masterpiece of medieval architecture, used to be the residence of the McDermott family, who ruled the area during that period. As the legend has it, once upon a time, a tragic story unfolded behind today’s Castle ruins. Úna Bhán, the daughter of the McDermott chief, fell in love with a young man named Tomás Láidir. Nothing wrong with that, you may think. Well, not so fast. This boy came from a lower rival class, and Úna’s father didn’t approve of their relationship. But the enamored couple kept their bond secret, despite King McDermott’s order, and every night, the young man swam across the chilly waters of Lough Key to reach the Castle and share intimate moments with his love. It was on one of these nights that tragedy stepped onto the scene, and the young man drowned. Úna, unable to get over the grief she felt from the loss of her boyfriend, passed away sometime after the tragic incident. Since then, their bodies have been buried under two intertwined trees on the island. Some say that their spirits still wander around the Castle, eternally bound by love and tragedy. Who knows? Maybe ghosts do exist after all.
